The installation was created while the artist was a lecturer for the lighting design course at Sunway University, Malaysia. The studio looked at the notion of sensorial deprivation and how the phenomenon can be translated using lighting, space and materiality. Students performed the Ganzfeld experiment, where they were blindfolded in a small lit room with just white noise playing in their ears. Each of their unique findings and feelings were documented and encapsulated into a spatial “abyss” - a deep seemingly bottomless chasm. The tunnel-like installation creates a loss of perception depth, using polycarbonate sheets and up-lighting to blur what’s known as the floor, wall and ceiling.
